History of sunflower oil

The sunflower is a wild-flower that are native to both North and South America, where indigenous people were the first to cultivate them.  It was taken to Spain in 1569 for ornamental use.

Two centuries later, the plants were being grown for their oil on a large scale in France and Bavaria, and following this development, they moved farther eastward into eastern Europe and especially Russia.

A high-oleic sunflower oil was originated in Russia in the mid-1970s as a result of selective breeding and mutagenesis. Due to the breeding efforts in Russia that sunflower turned into essential plant identity in the world.

The original Russia high-oleic line, ‘Prevenets’ has been developed into sunflower lines that have a stable high-oleic acid composition minimally affected by growing temperature.

Today, sunflower oil is one of the most popular oils in the world. Sunflower grows mainly in the Black Sea region having more than half percent of the world production and plant area since the first breeding efforts and higher seed and oil yielding varieties were developed in Russia.
