History of Saccharin

It was discovered by Fahlberg and Remsen in 1879 at the John Hopkins University and the patent for commercial manufacture was granted in 1885.

Constantine Fahlberg was a doctoral associate working in the laboratory of Prof. Remsen. Prof. Remsen later became the university’s president.

Saccharin was originally obtained through the oxidation of o-methyl-benzenesulfonamide, a starting material obtained by chlorosulfonation of toluene with chlorofosulfonic acid.

It was first commercialized in USA by Monsanto Chemical Company in 1901. Saccharin was its first product. Saccharin was introduce to the marketplace with great success both in the United States and Europe.

Saccharin use increased during the 1st and 2nd World War owing to sugar scarcity establishing it as an important food and pharmaceutical ingredient.

After the war, small packages of saccharin were commonly supplied in restaurants as an non-caloric sweetener for coffee and tea.

In early 1950, a newer process for saccharin production was developed and the Maumee Chemical Company was formed. The Maumee process uses anthranilic acid as the starting.

In the year 1963, the Coca-Cola Company introduced Tab- a diet cola sweetened with saccharin.
