Mozart chocolate (Mozartkugel)

Salzburg’s two main tourist attractions were its baroque architecture and its relationship with Mozart.

The invention of the chocolate Mozartkugel rapidly proved to be the ultimate form of tourist souvenir-cum-advertisement.

Mozart chocolate or Mozartkugel is a delicious candy created in 1890 by Salzburg confectioner Paul Furst to honor Salzburg’s famous musician, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

At first, the confectioner called them ‘Mozartbonbon’ and only later by the name which they are known world-wide today: Mozatkugeln.

When Fürst presented his sweet creation at a Paris fair in 1905, he was awarded a gold medal. The chocolate-covered Mozartkugel have a center of marzipan mixed with pistachio nuts.
